Los Angeles Refinery
Modernization Projects
Modernizing Today, Preparing for Tomorrow
Safely Producing Reliable and Affordable Fuels to Support California’s Energy Security
For more than a century, the Los Angeles Refinery has manufactured fuels that have enabled modern life. Since acquiring the facility in 2018 – which includes both the Carson and neighboring Wilmington sites – Marathon has proudly operated it with a clear mission: to safely provide a reliable and affordable fuel supply to Californians.
As the largest refinery on the West Coast, Marathon’s Los Angeles Refinery produces clean burning gas and diesel fuel used across the state, as well as jet fuel for the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
As California continues to work to balance its current and future energy needs, it’s important to ensure that Marathon’s Los Angeles Refinery operates efficiently and has the flexibility needed to meet market demands.
That is why Marathon is proposing the Los Angeles Refinery Modernization Projects, a collection of four separate projects, each designed to ensure continued energy security and service to customers.
These important improvements will not increase crude oil processing but will make modifications to:
- Replace equipment that is at the end of its useful life
- Produce asphalt products to meet local market demand
- Enable flexibility to shift transportation fuel production to align with market demand
- Improve efficiency to produce more high-octane needed for clean-gasoline blending
Marathon is at the very beginning stages of this process and is submitting permit applications to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD), the regulatory agency responsible for improving air quality for the South Coast Air Basin, for project approval.
